Background
The Converse City Council called this special election on whether VIA Metropolitan Transit service should continue in the city, according to VIA; a 'for' vote would discontinue VIA bus, VIAtrans and Precinct 4 VIA Link service in Converse after the vote is canvassed.
Under Texas Transportation Code Section 451.611, the state would keep collecting the half-cent sales tax that supports VIA in Converse until the city's net financial obligation, which VIA puts at at least $12,884,652, is paid, according to VIA.
KSAT reported that a VIA vice president told VIA's board of trustees in August that the tax brings in about $2.1 million a year, while city officials project it will grow to $2.4 million in 2027 and $3 million in 2030, and City Manager Stan Farmer cited other city needs such as roads, public safety and parks.
VIA says it runs three bus routes in Converse with about 76,000 boardings a year.
