Background

El Paso Matters reported that the Socorro ISD Board of Trustees voted 6-0, with Trustee Alice Gardea absent, to adopt a tax rate of $1.05 per $100 of valuation, above the 89-cent voter-approval rate, which triggered this ratification election; if voters reject it, the board would have to adopt the lower rate.

According to the same report, the measure would generate up to $49.2 million a year for additional teachers, pay raises, technology, heating and cooling upgrades and rebuilding savings, and would raise the district's tax on the average $253,800 home by about $160 a year; the ballot language itself puts the increase in maintenance and operations tax revenue at $17,341,476.

The district's required tax rate notice states the adopted rate will effectively raise maintenance and operations taxes by 18.71 percent, or about $111.60 on a $100,000 home.

Put on the ballot by Socorro ISD Board of Trustees, 6-0 (1 absent), August 2026 (per El Paso Matters).
