Laramie County — Renew 1% Sales & Use Tax (general revenue)
Ballot measure · November 3, 2026
Results: the official election results site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- Shall the Laramie County Commissioners be authorized to renew a one percent (1%) sales and use tax within the county as authorized by W.S. 39-15-204; the revenue to be used as general revenue?
- A YES vote means
- Laramie County would renew its 1% sales and use tax, with the money used as general revenue.
- A NO vote means
- Laramie County would not renew its 1% sales and use tax.
- What it would cost
- 1% sales tax: $1 on a $100 taxable purchase. It would continue a tax already in place rather than add a new one.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Unclear: our AI read of the official summary isn't confident enough (we require 70%) to place this on the left–right spectrum, so we don't. Read the summary and decide for yourself.
Background
Laramie County voters first approved this general-purpose 1% sales and use tax, known locally as the '5th Penny,' in 1977; its current term expires December 31, 2026, according to the Laramie County Commissioners.
The county says that, unlike the separate '6th Penny' specific-purpose tax that funds voter-approved projects, the 5th Penny revenue is used as general revenue for county operations.
Wyoming law (W.S. 39-15-204) authorizes the tax subject to voter approval; the question asks whether the commissioners may renew it.
