Background

The Charter Revision Committee presented four proposed revisions to the Board of Selectmen at a special meeting on August 24, 2026, including expanding the board from three to five members effective with the November 2027 town election, according to the minutes.

Committee member Trav Harmon told the meeting the added seats would cost about $16,000 a year, and a police commissioner read the statute providing that no more than three members of a five-member board may be from one party, according to the minutes.

All public speakers recorded in the minutes spoke in favor of the revisions or asked questions; none spoke in opposition.

At its regular meeting later that night, the Board of Selectmen voted 2–0, with one member absent, to send the commission's revisions to the town clerk and the state for the November ballot, according to the minutes.

Put on the ballot by Plainfield Board of Selectmen, 2–0 (Selectman Mike Surprenant absent), August 24, 2026.
