Ballot measure · November 3, 2026 · Gates Mills voters
Election night: live results from the official election site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- Shall Article VIII, Section 5 of the Charter of the Village of Gates Mills be amended to renew an existing tax levy for the public purpose of conserving, retaining, protecting and preserving land, water, forest, open, natural or wetland areas in this Municipality predominantly in their natural, scenic, open or wooded condition or as suitable habitat for fish, plants or wildlife, including the acquisition of such real property or interests therein as may be necessary to carry out that purpose, at a rate not exceeding 1 mill for each one dollar of valuation, which amounts to 10 cents for each one hundred dollars of valuation, for five years, commencing in 2026, first due in calendar year 2027?
- A YES vote means
- Gates Mills would renew an existing tax of up to 1 mill (10 cents per $100 of valuation) to conserve and preserve land, water, forest and natural areas, including buying property, for five years starting in 2026.
- A NO vote means
- Gates Mills would not renew this 1-mill land conservation tax.
- What it would cost
- Up to 1 mill for 5 years: $100 a year for every $100,000 of taxable value (a mill is $1 per $1,000). Ohio taxes 35% of a home's appraised value, so that's about $35 per $100,000 of appraised value; renewals often collect less than the full rate because of Ohio's tax-reduction factors. Taxable value is after exemptions such as homestead; your tax bill or property appraiser shows yours. It would continue a tax already in place rather than add a new one.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- A YES vote leans moderately left; a NO vote leans the other way (AI-estimated from the official ballot summary, 73% confidence).
