Ballot measure · November 3, 2026 · Orange voters
Election night: live results from the official election site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- Shall Article V, Section 3 of the Charter of the Village of Orange be amended to require the Law Director be licensed to practice in the State of Ohio; and to provide Council the authority to appoint special counsel upon the recommendation of Law Director, at the request of the Mayor, or its own initiative?
- A YES vote means
- The Orange Law Director would have to be licensed to practice in Ohio, and Council could appoint special counsel on the Law Director's recommendation, at the Mayor's request, or on its own.
- A NO vote means
- The charter's rules for the Law Director and special counsel would not change.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
Orange Village Council appointed a 2026 Charter Review Commission in January 2026 and, after receiving its recommendations, passed Ordinance No. 2026-18 on July 8, 2026 by a 7–0 vote to submit this and other Charter amendments to voters.
Charter Article V, Section 3 provides that the Law Director is appointed annually by Council and must be an attorney; the amendment would require the Law Director to be licensed to practice law in Ohio.
It would also let Council appoint special counsel with the same qualifications, on the Law Director's recommendation, at the Mayor's request or on its own initiative, by an ordinance the Mayor cannot veto, according to the amended text in Ordinance No. 2026-18.
