Charter Township of Waterford — Renewal of Police Operating Millage #2 (Oakland County)
Ballot measure · November 3, 2026 · Waterford Township voters
Results: the official election results site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- Shall the existing authorized Police Operating Millage #2 originally approved by voters in 1986, be renewed at the current 1.3352 mills ($1.3352 per $1000.00 of taxable value) upon taxable real and personal property within the Charter Township of Waterford for a period of ten (10) years, 2026 through 2035, thereby generating in the first year an estimated $4,532,219.12 to be used for the cost of staffing, maintenance and operation of the police department?
- A YES vote means
- Waterford Township would renew Police Operating Millage #2 at 1.3352 mills for ten years, 2026 through 2035, raising about $4,532,219.12 the first year for the police department.
- A NO vote means
- Waterford Township's Police Operating Millage #2 would not be renewed.
- What it would cost
- 1.3352 mills (estimated) for 10 years: $134 a year for every $100,000 of taxable value (a mill is $1 per $1,000). Taxable value is after exemptions such as homestead; your tax bill or property appraiser shows yours. It would continue a tax already in place rather than add a new one.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
According to the ballot language, Waterford Township's Police Operating Millage #2 was first approved by voters in 1986; this proposal would renew it at the current 1.3352 mills for ten years, 2026 through 2035, estimated to raise $4,532,219.12 in the first year for police staffing, maintenance and operations.
WXYZ reported that voters rejected two of three township public safety millage proposals in the August 2026 primary, and that trustees then voted to send the two failed proposals back to the November ballot as renewals with no tax increase.
