Background

According to the Orion Township Public Library, its current building was planned in the late 1980s and opened in 1989, and a 2024 space utilization study informed by public feedback produced the proposed improvements.

The proposal would let the Charter Township of Orion issue up to $13.3 million in general obligation bonds, repaid over up to 20 years, to add an estimated 5,830 square feet to the library (about 900 for Bookmobile materials) and renovate it for children's programming, community and learning spaces, technology and accessibility.

The ballot language estimates 0.3116 mill in 2027 and an average of 0.3117 mill; the library estimates the average cost at about $47 a year for a house with a $150,000 taxable value, and says that if the bond fails it would continue to prioritize maintenance and repairs within available funds.

Put on the ballot by Charter Township of Orion Board of Trustees, at the request of the Orion Township Public Library (2026).
