Background
According to the City Attorney's impartial analysis, Sanger currently charges a 4% transient occupancy tax on lodging stays of 30 consecutive days or less, and Measure B would raise it to 12% and rewrite the ordinance.
The amended ordinance would expressly cover short-term rentals such as vacation rentals, home-sharing units, accessory dwelling units, campgrounds and RV spaces, require operators to register and remit the tax, allow online platforms to be required to collect it, and apply the tax to the total rent including mandatory fees.
It is a general tax deposited in the City's general fund for any lawful purpose, continuing until ended by voters; the Council could not raise the rate or extend the tax to new occupancies without voter approval. The ballot question estimates about $55,037 a year.
