Ballot measure · November 3, 2026 · Whittier voters
Results: the official election results site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- Shall the measure amending the City's charter to prohibit candidates from running for mayor or member of the city council if their election would result in that candidate serving more than 12 total years in elective office in the City (aside from terms of office that were elected or appointed at or prior to November 3, 2026) be adopted?
- A YES vote means
- Whittier's charter would bar anyone from running for mayor or city council if winning would mean serving more than 12 total years in city elective office, not counting terms won or appointed on or before November 3, 2026.
- A NO vote means
- Whittier's charter would not add this 12-year limit on city elective office.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
The Whittier City Council placed this charter amendment on the ballot by Resolution No. 2026-34, adopted 5-0 on June 23, 2026, which also calls a separate charter amendment moving city elections from April to November of even-numbered years.
The proposed ordinance (No. 3178) states that Whittier currently has no term limits for elected officials, and would add Charter Section 401.5 barring anyone from running for mayor or city council if winning would result in serving more than 12 total years in city elective office.
Under the proposed text, terms to which an officeholder was elected or appointed on or before November 3, 2026 would not count toward the 12 years.
