- A NO vote means
- Whittier's city elections would stay in April of even-numbered years.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
The Whittier City Council placed this charter amendment on the ballot by Resolution No. 2026-34, adopted 5-0 on June 23, 2026, which also calls a separate charter amendment (Measure EL) imposing a 12-year limit on service as mayor or council member.
According to the proposed ordinance (No. 3177), Whittier now holds general municipal elections on the second Tuesday in April of even-numbered years, and voter turnout is higher at statewide general elections; the first November city election would be held November 7, 2028.
Under the ordinance, the current mayor's term and the terms of council members elected in 2024 would be extended to the 2028 election, and terms of those elected in 2026 would be extended to the 2030 election.
