Background

According to the Maricopa County School Superintendent's informational pamphlet, Tolleson Union High School District's governing board called this election to renew and increase its 15% maintenance and operation budget override for seven years.

The district estimates the override at $16,304,710 for 2027/2028, funded by a secondary property tax of about $0.72 per $100 of net assessed value. The current override is already in its phase-out and has been reduced by one-third ($5,434,903).

If the measure fails, the override would drop by another third in 2027/2028 and would no longer be levied from 2028/2029, with each one-third step lowering the tax rate by $0.24. The district estimates the cost at about $112 a year for a home with a limited property value of $154,934, the district average.

Arguments both for and against were submitted for the pamphlet.

Put on the ballot by Tolleson Union High School District No. 214 Governing Board (special budget override election call; date and vote not stated in the pamphlet).
